Taking Aim at Autoimmune Diseases

Photo of woman
About 50 million Americans suffer with autoimmune diseases. Although some of these diseases are rare, collectively they are one of the top 10 leading causes of death in children and women age 65 and younger.

Yet, these common and potentially deadly diseases remain somewhat of a medical mystery.

Understanding autoimmune diseases There are about 80 serious and chronic autoimmune illnesses which seem to occur when the body's immune system goes awry.

"Our immune system is designed to defend the body against foreign invaders, including bacteria, viruses and other microbes," says Jim Christensen, MD, an allergy and immunology specialist. "In some people, however, the immune system mistakenly starts attacking its own cells, tissues and organs."

Some of the most common autoimmune diseases include lupus, multiple sclerosis, Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis, psoriasis, rheumatoid arthritis and scleroderma.

Treating autoimmune diseases
Most autoimmune diseases can't be cured, so patients often need lifelong care and monitoring.

"Appropriate treatment helps patients manage their symptoms and can even cause their disease to go into remission so that patients can lead more normal lives," says Dr. Christensen.

Treatment varies depending on the disease and each patient's condition. It may include medications to control inflammation, slow or halt the progression of the disease or suppress the immune system.

Did You Know?

  • Autoimmune diseases can affect nearly any organ in the body.
  • About 75 percent of those who suffer with autoimmune diseases are women.
  • Heredity may play a role in autoimmune diseases. Some people seem to inherit genes for a specific autoimmune disease, while others seem to share genes that make them more susceptible to autoimmune diseases in general.
