| ![]() ![]() Caring Close to Home -- Vela Maria Orozco, RN, BSN
Orozco readily agreed. She wasn't a trained healthcare provider, but for the next several years she cared for her grandfather until he became so ill that he needed constant care. While helping her grandfather, Orozco learned something about herself. "I realized that caring isn't just an important aspect of my life, it's the basis of my life," explains Orozco. So she entered the healthcare field, starting as a nursing assistant and advancing to a position as a licensed practical nurse. In 1990, she became a registered nurse. "I went to nursing school so I would have more knowledge, more skills and an even greater ability to care for others," says Orozco. Today, Orozco works in the Post Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU) at Spring Valley Hospital Medical Center where she provides hands-on care to patients who have undergone surgery. "I love interacting with patients and helping them feel as comfortable as possible after surgery," says Orozco. She is so committed to her patients that she volunteers for many activities at Spring Valley Hospital. For example, she's a member of the Service Excellence Committee, a preceptor for nurses new to her unit and served as a tour guide prior to the hospital opening. For Orozco, nursing is more than a career -- it's a way of life. "Nursing gives me a chance to focus every day on caring for others," she says. "But nursing is a great career choice for other reasons as well. We have a career that offers a lot of flexibility, variety and opportunity for advancement."
