1. Get Fit
Every New Year's, millions of Americans make resolutions to change something in their lives ... and fitness and health usually top the list. This year, reinforce your commitment to better health by training with us for The Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation's 9th Annual Las Vegas Race for the Cure®.

Komen Race for the Cure®
First held in Las Vegas in 1996, the Komen Race for the Cure® has grown to be the largest foot race in Nevada, with almost 12,000 participants in 2003. In 2004, the race will be held on Saturday, May 1. The course, refreshments and entertainment all take place around the Freemont Street Experience in downtown Las Vegas. The 5K Run/Walk starts around 8 AM. To register for the race, call 252-RACE or visit www.lvraceforthecure.com.

Tips to get started
"Pacing yourself at the beginning of any new exercise program is the key to success," says Joel Vidaña, DPT, MTC, Manager of the Outpatient Therapy Center at Summerlin Hospital Medical Center.

Here are some tips to get you started running:

  • As a standard precaution, get a checkup from a licensed physician before beginning your new exercise program.
  • Wear comfortable clothing and appropriate shoes for running/walking.
  • Avoid running on hard surfaces; run on soft tracks, pavement, dirt or grass surfaces.
  • Most injuries respond well to RICE (rest, ice, compression and elevation).

Go to www.summerlinhospital.org for more tips or call Summerlin Hospital's Outpatient Therapy Center at 233-7471 with questions.

2. Get My Annual Mammogram
The Women's Center at Summerlin Hospital Medical Center offers women getting their mammograms comfort and convenience -- from our attractive setting and specially designed robes to our extended hours and reminder service. Call 233-7203 to schedule your appointment.

3. Do Monthly Self-Checks
Early detection of breast cancer saves lives! As a co-sponsor of the Buddy Check 8 program, Summerlin Hospital Medical Center encourages women to find a friend who they can "buddy" with to remind each other to do monthly self-exams. Call 82-CHECK to request your toolkit or visit www.klastv.com.

The Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation
The Komen Race for the Cure® is the signature fundraising event for The Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, a national organization dedicated to the fight to eradicate breast cancer as a life-threatening disease. About 75 percent of race proceeds go to local breast health initiatives, with the balance funding national research efforts.
