Minimally Invasive Procedure Gives Women Their Lives Back

Lynne Goulder wasn't willing to let menopause slow her busy, active life. She took medication to minimize her menopausal symptoms and felt great. Then she developed a setback that began affecting the quality of her life.

"I started spotting," says Goulder. "At first, I had light spotting a day here or there. Then it got worse and I'd spot about every other week. I had to plan for spotting constantly in case it happened that day. I was always worried about having an 'accident.'"

Goulder talked with her doctor, Jeffrey Wrightson, MD, an OB/GYN on staff at Valley Hospital Medical Center, about her symptoms. She was relieved to learn that having a hysterectomy, surgical removal of the uterus, wasn't the only treatment for abnormal bleeding.

"NovaSure® endometrial ablation is an option for many women with abnormal bleeding who don't plan on having children in the future," says Dr. Wrightson. "It's a safe and effective minimally invasive procedure that removes the lining of the uterus to help control abnormal bleeding."

How It Works
Before performing a NovaSure procedure, Dr. Wrightson measures the patient's uterine cavity and inputs that data into a computer. A sophisticated software program calculates the optimal treatment time for the patient.

For the procedure, Dr. Wrightson dilates the patient's cervix and inserts a treatment wand into her uterus. The wand expands to fill the uterine cavity. Then he delivers electromagnetic energy for a specified period of time to destroy the uterine lining.

"Some patients stop bleeding right away. Others find that their bleeding decreases substantially in the first months following their procedure," Dr. Wrightson says. "Most women are amazed at the results. They can finally go places without anxiety and live the lives they want to."

"I have a new sense of freedom," Goulder says. "I don't have to worry about bleeding anymore."
